One college photography teacher recently banned 18-55mm kit lenses from her classes. You read that right – not recommended against them, not suggested alternatives, but completely forbid her students to use them in her classes. As you can imagine, this has sparked outrage in the photo community. And as you can probably guess – I’d have something to say about it, too. A student at the aforementioned college shared the syllabus of his photography course on Reddit....

Anamorphic lenses have been the domain of high-end cinema for a long time. They were a way to get around the limitations of relatively narrow film to shoot widescreen (and wider) footage. As digital sensors have typically taken on the traditional 4:3 and 3:2 aspect ratios of film (yes, there are a few 16:9 ones out there), anamorphic lenses have become favourites with digital, too. But anamorphic lenses are expensive. Crazy expensive....

It was my first year in college. I was going out everyday to teach myself photography, Harry Potter had just come out in theaters (although I wouldn’t see it for a few more years) and Canon entered the digital photography world with their very first fully backed flagship, the Canon EOS 1D. At the time, I was shooting on the Canon EOS D30, and didn’t see any way in sight of affording the 1D, but also didn’t think I really needed it either....

When we talk about the Shutter Speed in photography the first thing that comes to mind is its is relationship to Exposure. The Shutter speed is the essential part of Exposure Triangle (Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed) and it helps photographers to get perfectly exposed photos. But my belief is that to understand and to master Shutter Speed for taking the perfectly exposed images is the easiest part of the equation. The more exciting but at the same time more challenging part is to learn how to use Shutter Speed as the artistic tool in our photography....

We should be used to it by now, but it’s always sad to see the magazines we love disappear. Just last year, Popular Photography magazine closed after 80 years of business. And today, the 45-year print-business veteran Shutterbug announced that they will no longer publish their print magazine as well. However, it’s not all bad news for Shutterbug as they will continue their operations online.“Shutterbug.com has grown dramatically in recent years with record traffic and expanded reach to photographers around the world,” Editor-in-Chief Dan Havlik says....
