Who says the wristwatch is dead? Not Apple at any rate as they have just filed a patent application for a “watch having a camera” Yep, we have camera-phones, but now it looks like we may get a camera-watch in future. But don’t worry, it will probably be more James Bond than Flight of the Concords. Apple isn’t planning to actually glue a point and shoot onto a watch, they’ve come up with several different ideas for how to execute it....

I’ve had my little NEX 5n marvel now for 5 years and long ago came to grips with its charms and deficits and reached a point where most of its operation is totally intuitive. It’s been my main snap shooter and travel camera companion since early 2012 yet even today the files compare nicely with those from the A6000 and A6300. More recently however the NEX 5n has been relegated to classroom duties as a shiny new Olympus EM 5 mk 2 has been pressed into service for travel and casual shooting duties....

One of the claims Canon’s made in the past over its DSLR and mirrorless cameras and the lack of certain video features compared to their higher end (more expensive) dedicated video cameras (and the DSLRs and mirrorless cameras their competition is releasing) is that they can’t keep the bodies cool enough. Whether or not that’s true, a new Canon patent showing a camera with a built-in fan behind the LCD might suggest that they’re getting ready to start stepping things up a bit....

Canon has previously predicted a 50% drop in camera sales over the next two years, and it seems that they might be right according to their latest financial report from Q1 2019. According to the report, they’re already seeing a 23% decline in camera sales from last year, with an 81% drop in operating profit vs Q1 2018. The report notes that unit sales are down much faster than expected, with entry-level DSLR sales falling rapidly along with an economic slowdown in China....

We have seen several AI-based colorizing tools so far, and colourise.sg is the latest addition to this bunch. While some other services like Algorithmia still need to improve, colourise.sg is capable of doing a fantastic job in only a matter of seconds. Colourise.sg was trained using old Singaporean photos. The makers write that the point of colorization is to generate an image with plausible colors, and they may not be an accurate representation of the actual snapshot in time....
