Samsung has announced their newest portable SSD, the Samsung T7 Shield. Now, on first glance, especially given the name, it might just sound like a regular Samsung T7 drive in a fancy rugged enclosure and… Well, yeah, that’s pretty much exactly what it is. But now that the world is opening back up and photographers and filmmakers are getting back on the road to start shooting in extreme locations, backup storage that can handle those extreme conditions is handy....

There are a number of pocketable 360° cameras out there now, like the Insta360 ONE X, Insta360 EVO, YI 360 VR, and countless others, but the resolution limit for pocketable 360° cameras seems to have been 5.7K. There are also a number of 8K cameras out there, too, but most are pretty big. Now, that’s changed with the new QooCam 8K. You might remember the Qoocam for that funny looking twisting 4K 360° camera which also shoots 3D 180° footage....

Just when you think memory card speed limits are being hit, along comes the SD association to prove you wrong. This time, they’re announcing the SD Express 8.0 (SD8.0) specification which comes with transfer speeds of up to 4GB/sec (2GB/sec per lane up to two lanes). It’s built on the PCIe 4.0 standard and utilises NVM Express (NVMe) storage. The first SD Express standard (SD7.0) was unveiled in 2018, offering transfer speeds of up to 985MB/sec, but it’s already been obsoleted by SD8....
