Teased last week, Insta360 has today launched the new Insta360 EVO, a 360° camera that also turns into a stereoscopic 3D 180° camera. Like the Insta360 ONE X, the Insta360 EVO shoots 5.7K 360° video, and 18-megapixel 360° still photos. What’s very cool, though, is that the stereo 3D 180° view comes with the same FlowState stabilisation afforded to the Insta360 ONE X camera. From personal experience, I can say that on ONE X footage, you’d swear it was shot from a gimbal....

When I first stumbled across this, I thought it was a pretty neat idea. Of course, it’s not an entirely new idea. Agfa used to make a similar device. The Rondinax. Of course, you needed completely separate units for 35mm and 120 format film. The LAB-BOX works on a similar principle, but is a little more modular, allowing you to develop both with the same unit. With the Kickstarter campaign launched only a couple of days ago, it’s already smashed its €70,000 goal....

I’ve seen a lot of talk on Facebook lately about a new Mavic potentially on the horizon recently. Either a much more advanced version with better video, or a cut down, less expensive alternative. In a similar fashion to their Phantom lines which have typically had 2 or 3 different models for each major version. It seems, though, that both of these lines of thought might be wrong. It’s always interesting to see what products people are renting for their productions. Probably more so than the gear people are actually buying. Many filmmakers and photographers buy stuff because they want it, not necessarily because they need it. But to justify the cost of a rental, the gear typically has to offer features you do actually need and can justify spending the cash on (because you typically have to justify it to a client, too)....
