A controversial court ruling in July 2018 that said it was ok to just take photos from the web and reuse them has been overturned by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The previous ruling said that Violent Hues Productions use of photographer Russel Brammer’s image fell under “Fair Use” and that it was “transformative”, denying his infringement claim. But this decision has now been reversed. Brammer sued Violent Hues Productions in 2017 for unauthorised use of a timelapse photograph of the Adams Morgan neighbourhood of Washington, DC....

As a lot of you may know, I like to use the occasional gel in my shots to add a bit of interest. Sometimes these gels are rich and vibrant colours that drench an image in saturation and other times I just want to add a little something extra colour-wise without overpowering the whole image with a synthesised coloured look. For a more subtle colour look you’ll want to use tones that our eyes are more accustomed to seeing, for example orange and blue tones are heavily present in our daily visual journeys already....

There’s a fast new lens in the Laowa Micro Four Thirds lineup. Venus Optics has today announced their new Laowa Argus 25mm f/0.95 MFT APO lens. Offering a similar field of view and relative depth of field to a 50mm f/1.8 on full-frame, but with two stops of extra light gathering ability, Laowa says the lens creates a nice soft bokeh and lets you shoot in very low lighting conditions with lower ISO values....

For most of our readers who are also Star Wars fans, today is a big day – Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres today. The movie cast has been under the spotlight for the past few weeks, giving interviews and being photographed. Photographer Jesse Dittmar got to capture their group shot for The New York Times, and he only got two minutes to do it! Last week, the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was being interviewed and photographed for various publications....

Photos of rock stacks adorn our Instagram feeds. There are videos of them being created in elaborate styles. Sometimes they defy gravity with anything from pebbles to boulders in their formations. These eye-catching photos are usually framed against stunning natural backdrops and have a calm and tranquil quality to them. There’s a darker side to these stacks, though. Two of them actually. So much so, that researchers are warning against making them....
