Figure to ground means that a subject or idea (figure) is clearly defined against a background. This can be achieved through technical means, ie depth of field, or compositional means. My preferred method is to make sure that everything in my photographs fit neatly in place. Unless elements are specifically interacting then they do not need to touch. No lampposts coming out of heads in portraits, no walls going through bodies....

Large productions using several cameras shooting 8K means that there will be a lot of data to both store and somehow get from the cameras to the rest of the creative team working on post-production. Phase One have today introduced a new variant of their IQ3 100MP digital back. The IQ3 100MP Trichromatic. Featuring a new Bayer filter CMOS sensor design, developed in partnership with Sony, the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic attempts to replicate how the human eye sees colour. The technology, Phase One say, promises that the Trichromatic back will bring “unsurpassed colour quality to the hands of the finest photographers across the globe”. A pretty bold claim to make, but knowing Phase One, they wouldn’t make it if they didn’t feel they could back it up....

Not long ago, photographer Adam Grumbo received a Facebook message from a “hot American girl.” It turned out to be a scammer from Nigeria, who wasn’t very good at pretending to be someone else. Instead of reporting or blocking him, Adam tried something unexpected. He hired the scammer to document life in his village and share photos and videos with Adam. Although unusual and risky, it turned out to be a great decision....

My photography peers thought I was mad. I thought I was mad, taking just a 50mm lens and one camera to the south island of New Zealand for a week. The rules were simple. Attempt to make compelling photographs with a 50mm lens using any creative methods I could conjure up. Panos, single frames, cropping in post, long exposures and filters were used, but only one lens. My itinerary included Queenstown and the surrounding grand mountain-scapes followed by Milford Sound with its utter incredible, king of the world, spectacular life changing scenery....
