With yesterday’s announcement of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, I thought we might see a little more information come out about the RED Komodo not too long after. The Komodo is to be RED’s “low budget” cinema camera. There’s still much we don’t know about the new camera, although a new teaser from RED president Jarred Land does seem to confirm that it’ll shoot 6K. I suppose it isn’t really much of a surprise that the Komodo will shoot 6K....

Coming out of CP+ 2019, Ricoh has today announced their latest 360° camera, the Ricoh THETA Z1. The new model expands on the previous Theta V with a number of new features, the most noticeable of which is the somewhat giant leap from 12 to 23-megapixel still images – which can now be shot in Adobe DNG raw format as well as jpg. It also features a new processing algorithm offering HDR, interval composite shooting for things like star trails, as well as bracketing for up to 19 shots....

The ongoing chip and semi-conductor shortage is not exactly news and has been affecting quite a few camera producers over the past year. However, lens brand Sigma recently confirmed that they too are experiencing supply issues that will affect their rollout and distribution of products over the coming months. The Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki recently replied to a question on Twitter by customer Terry Hastings asking about production and wondering when he might expect his new lenses that he’d ordered....

With a title like “The Truth about Sony”, I thought this video was just going to be more fanboy hate, but I was convinced to watch it and was quite surprised. Matt Granger is a pretty notorious Nikon die-hard, so you can understand my initial reaction. But in the video, he takes a good look at the issues that Sony has had over the years of its mirrorless camera development and how it’s overcome almost all of them....

It’s probably not that much of a surprise, but Sony absolutely destroyed pretty much all their competition in 2020 when it came to the smartphone camera sensor market in 2020, with a 46% market revenue share, according to a report by Strategy Analytics. They say the global smartphone image sensor market recorded over $15 billion in revenue in 2020, up 13% year-on-year. What’s perhaps equally as surprising as Sony’s huge 46% share is that 85% of the market was taken up by just three companies; Sony, Samsung at 29% and OmniVision at 10%....
