I think the question of whether something is or is not art is a bit disingenuous, and can be used more as a tool for gatekeeping than true analysis or critique. There is no objective standard for what makes something enjoyable as a piece of art, whether that is a photograph, music, sculpture, or a blade of grass in a field. However when it comes to the deliberate creation of an artefact I think that the intention of the creator is very powerful, and can offer some strong insight into the way that work can be interpreted....

When I go to a photography exhibit or show, I find myself looking at similar work. Photographs made from an inkjet printer, that are just stylised archives. Be it a photo of a bird, a photo of a dress, subject or event. Whatever it is, it’s just a photograph. A photograph that can be easily duplicated with the simple press of a button. A print on a piece of paper, nothing more, nothing less....

Australian filmmaker James Ricketson was sentenced this Friday to six years in a Cambodian prison. The 69-year-old filmmaker was arrested in June 2017 after he flew a drone at an opposition party rally. Recently, a Cambodian court charged him for espionage and sentenced him to jail. According to TIME Magazine, Ricketson has already been held in pre-trial detention ever since he was arrested, for over a year. He was accused of “collecting information that could be damaging to national defense,” which got him arrested back in 2017....

Blind Spot Gear, the company behind 2018’s original Power Junkie, is back with an update. It’s the Power Junkie v2, and it’s just launched today through Kickstarter. If you’ve no idea what the Power Junkie is, it’s a battery plate that takes Sony NP-F style batteries and provides outputs with which you can power other gear, like cameras, monitors, field recorders, etc. It negates the need to have multiple batteries for multiple devices....
