Before Instagram, selfie sticks, disposable cameras, Polaroids, and box brownies, there were carte de visites – small photographic albumen prints, mounted on card, which were wildly popular during the Victorian era. Also known as CdV, carte de visites followed the early pioneering photographic techniques such as daguerreotype and ambrotype, which were expensive and difficult to reproduce. Cartes de visites were born from calling cards, which bore the owner’s name and usually an emblem, and were presented to the host during a social visit....

With some data issues occurring, NASA has decided to slowly start shutting down the Voyager probes after 45 years in operation. It started with heaters and other nonessential components, and the record-breaking spacecraft will remain operable until around 2030 when their journey will end. This program is remarkable and groundbreaking for so many reasons, starting with the very lifespan of the spacecraft. According to serial leakers, who are usually fairly right, Nokishita, Nikon is planning to “make some announcements” about the Nikon D6 DSLR, successor to the current flagship Nikon D5. In a post made to Twitter, Nokishita says that the announcements will come on September 4th. Yes, that’s right, next Wednesday. https://twitter.com/nokishita_c/status/1167304807557652480 The translated Tweet reads… It’s unclear exactly what Nikon will announce, nor what necessitates “some announcements” rather than “an announcement”....

Swiss photographer René Robert died after suffering a dizzy spell and falling on a Paris street in his neighbourhood. Robert was ignored by passersby and was left lying on the sidewalk for 9 hours until somebody finally called emergency services. Sadly by then, it was too late, and the esteemed 84-year-old photographer succumbed to hypothermia. Robert reportedly left his home at 9:30 pm for his usual evening stroll around the busy neighbourhood in central Paris....
