I imagine a world where, at some point, somebody told Kathy Griffin she was funny as some kind of prank. But, she believed it and has ran with it ever since. Sure, I’m probably not all that funny, either, but I’m not attempting to make a living out of it. Her latest act of “comedy” has landed both Griffin and photographer Tyler Shields in some pretty hot water. The photo, obscured above, shows Griffin holding up a blood covered Donald Trump mask, made to look like a decapitated head....

A few days ago, I saw sad news on my Facebook feed: Kenny Rogers had passed away. Most of us know him as a legendary country music singer, and you may wonder what this news has to do with photography. Well, as I recently found out: Kenny Rogers was also a fantastic photographer. Kenny Rogers was born on 21 August 1938 in Houston, Texas. As I believe we all know, he was famous for his career in country music, but he also played in several movies....

So before the film school nerds explode, let me just explain what a ‘scrim’ actually is and what the term colloquially means to us photographers. Technically scrims are large sheets of black woven fabric that reduce the brightness of a light when placed in front of them (these are usually constant HMI lights that don’t have individual brightness adjusters). There are alternative large sheets of fabric that are placed in front of lights called ‘silks’ and these are actually white in colour....

During the Apple event last September for the new iPhone 11 models, Apple spoke about a new tech they call “Deep Fusion”. It’s a process whereby 9 images are combined using an AI engine in order to create a single image to present the most detail possible. There haven’t really been any good samples of it out there, though, until now. The feature has appeared in the latest iOS 13 developer beta, and now lots of samples showing off its capabilities have started to pop up on the web – most notably on Twitter....

Well, it looks like the Nikon D850 is a big hit, if the pre-order is anything to go by. Nikon have actually sold out of all of their pre-order stock, and have issued a notice apologising for expected shipping delays. I suppose it’s not really much of a surprise that demand for the D850 is somewhat overwhelming. Once the final specs were made public, and the first reviews out, there were a lot of happy people out there....
