The Insta360 Titan is a ridiculous beast of a camera. It offers a level of quality that most of us will never need in our wildest dream projects. But if you’re shooting high-end immersive content, it could be the ideal tool for the job. The Insta360 Titan houses eight Micro Four Thirds sensors to offer a combined 11K resolution at 30 frames per second, but it can also shoot 8K at up to 60 frames per second or 5.3K at 120 frames per second. Oh, and it can also shoot 3D 360 video at 10K resolution at 30fps. We had a chat with Insta360 at NAB 2019 to find out more about it.
Ever since the original announcement, I’ve wanted to check out the Insta360 Titan in person, and it is an extremely impressive camera. Definitely aimed at a much higher level of production than I need, it’s still going to be quite familiar to users of Insta360’s lower end products like the Insta360 ONE X. The workflow is very similar, but with a few extras. While the Titan isn’t exactly portable like the Insta360 ONE X or EVO cameras, it offers the same Flowstate stabilisation system. In the Insta360 ONE X, Flowstate works incredibly well to produce pretty rock steady footage with even the most jerky of camera movements. If the Titan offers the same level of stabilisation, and I imagine it does, then it will be incredibly useful for high-end immersive content creation, and could potentially replace using several regular flat 2D cameras for many tasks using the FreeCapture workflow. It also supports live streaming in 2D and 3D formats, at up to 4K resolution. The Titan also offers wireless live streaming through a proprietary system at distances of up to 1 kilometre. This means that you don’t have to hide behind bushes at close range to be able to monitor what the camera is seeing. You can sit at a distance, not be in the shot and still keep an eye on the camera’s view. The Insta360 Titan is available to pre-order now for $14,999 and is expected to start shipping in MAy 2019.
